The Origins of the Gorkha Warriors

The story of the Gorkhas dates back to the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814-1816).

  • The British East India Company was astonished by the fighting spirit of the Nepalese soldiers.
  • Instead of defeating them, the British decided to recruit them into their army.
  • This led to the formation of the first Gorkha battalion in 1815.


Gorkhas in World Wars and Indian Wars

World War I & II: Gorkhas fought bravely for the British Indian Army, earning several Victoria Crosses for valor.
India-Pakistan Wars (1947, 1965, 1971): Gorkhas played a decisive role in key battles, showing their unmatched courage.
1962 Indo-China War: Gorkhas engaged in fierce hand-to-hand combat in the Himalayan heights.
Kargil War (1999): The Gorkha Regiment was at the forefront of India's victory.

The Khukri – The Deadly Weapon of the Gorkhas

Some Famous Gorkha Soldiers

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw (India’s first Field Marshal) served with the 8th Gorkha Rifles.

Captain Manoj Pandey (Param Vir Chakra, Kargil War) belonged to the 11th Gorkha Rifles.

✅ Major Dhan Singh Thapa (Param Vir Chakra, 1962 Sino-Indian War) served with the 1st Battalion, 8 Gorkha Rifles.

Lt. Hari Singh Bist (Shaurya Chakra, Counter terrorist operations) served with the 3rd Battalion of the 11th Gorkha Rifles.

Nk. Nar Bahadur Thapa (Ashok Chakra Class I, Hyderabad police action 1948) served with the 5th Battalion of the 5th Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force).
